UPCOMING - NAGA TOWER IN GIFT CITY, GUJARAT, INDIA

NAGA TOWERS IN GIFT CITY

The picture shown below is that of the proposed 54-storey Naga Towers coming up in India’s largest greenfield megaproject, the Gujarat International Finance Tech-City. As the name suggests, they are inspired by the Indian cultural symbol, the ‘Naga’ which is the sanskrit word for the hooded cobra snake. The snakelike design is evident and according to ECADI architects, “the springing and leaping action of the snake is reflected in the form of the buildings in a symbolic indication of awareness and vitality.” The inspiration doesn’t end there, as the Naga “concept of duality and contradiction is represented in the double motif that eventually join to make one building.”
A worm’s eye view of the proposed Naga towers at GIFT City.
GUJARAT INTERNATIONAL FINANCE TEC-CITY (GIFT):
Before I describe the Naga towers, its necessary to give some information on the GIFT project. The picture shown below is that of the proposed Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) on the banks of the Sabramati river, which will be one of the world’s largest and most modern financial hubs. The site is located at Gandhinagar, the capital city of the industrial Indian state of Gujarat and near the state’s commercial capital, Ahmedabad. In addition it’s strong proximity and infrastructure connectivity with Mumbai ensures that mutually beneficial development occurs between the two metros. When completed, GIFT city will be at or above par with presently acknowledged global financial centers such as Shinjuku (Tokyo), Lujiazui (Shanghai), La Defense (Paris) and Dockyards (London). Size-wise too, at over 75 million sq. feet of office space, it is almost twice the size of Shinjuku, Luijiazui, La Defense and Dockyards combined!
Here is a view of the GIFT city on the banks of the Sabramati River. The Block package E towers can be seen on the left side of the skyline.
The scale of GIFT is singularly massive, unparalleled in the world except for a handfull of Dubai megaprojects. GIFT-City will have 312 tall buildings — the tallest being the signature Diamond Tower with 87 floors; another 40 buildings with more than 50 floors and many more with 24 plus floors of height. The entire project is not only fully approved but already completely sold out due to the high demand as it is estimated that India’s booming financial services market will employ 10 million people by 2020. Construction will begin later this year.
For more information on GIFT as a whole, check out GIFT CITY.
ARCHITECTS:
The GIFT city is being masterplanned by East China Architectural Design & Research Institute ECADI, which is responsible for planning much of Shanghai, and Fairwood Consultants India, one of India’s largest and fastest growing consulting firms. The Naga towers are the architects’ interpretation of a very important cultural and religious symbol of India, the ‘Naga’ commonly known as the King Cobra snake. This serpent God is worshipped in many places in India and so has religious value.
WHY WAS THE NAGA SYMBOL USED IN THE GIFT PROJECT?
Noting the tremendous “recall value of the Naga which is an important part of popular indian culture”, the designers of GIFT decided that a modern interpretation on this ancient symbol would befit such a far-reaching project.
In Indian and Southeast Asian architecture, the statue of the Naga is placed flanking the entryways of a city, the temple and the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, symbolically guarding the approach to a higher spiritual truth. Similarly, the Naga Towers are directly situated on the Dream River waterfront, dominating the main water approaches to the CBD.
SIGNIFICANCE OF ‘NAGA’ :
In order to explain the relevance of the Naga Towers’ design, one must first explain the Symbolism attached to the Naga itself. The Naga, or cobra snake plays an integral part of India’s cultural ethos, philosophies, traditions and religions. The Naga is worshipped in many parts of India as it is considered very sacred . The ancient lore is that the Nagas live in the underground city called Bhogavati and are considered the protectors of springs, wells and rivers and are believed to bring rain and therefore fertility.
The Naga has always been depicted in indian sculptures as standing up with its spread hood. The coiled body of the serpant rising represents the symbolic rising of the Kundalini, or spiritual energy. This powerful symbol of the Naga has been re-interpreted in the commercial-use Naga Towers shown here.

A bird-view perspective of the proposed Naga towers. Note the hood and the eye like structure on top.
The tower has been completely approved by all governing and oversight bodies and will be constructed in the first phase of the project. Construction is expected to begin later this year, but may be put on hold if more redesigns/upscaling of the project are in the offing.
WHY WAS NAGA WORSHIPPED IN INDIA?
Indian Hooded Cobra,Spectacled cobra Naja naja
Th Cobra with its raised hood looks highly intimidating.
The cobra with it’s spreaded hood, hissing sounds, black forked tongue can stand up and look a man in the eye and scare the living daylights out of him. Yet it is worshipped in India. Why?
The answer is that it was the only way this useful animal that eats rats, frogs, lizards and other snakes, could be protected from being killed by distraugt people who come face to face with it. Not surprisingly, a superstition exists even today of a curse on the person who kills such a snake and is believed to affect the person even in their next lives unless an elaborate correction pooja is performed. (When Sachin Tendulkar was not performing well for a long period, he was ‘diagnosed as suffering under the curse of a snake’ that he supposedly killed in his last birth. Whether he believed in it or just to soothe his mind, he went to a famous temple to do a corrective pooja. And he started performing better after that!)
However surprisingly in villages and rural areas, people live in harmony with cobras. They get out of their way and let them be which is something we all should try to emulate.

Ashoka Flowers:- The flower of love

Here’s a very interesting matter during my surfing on the net some couple of days ago, it is about Asoka tree. Asoka tree is flowering throughout the whole year. I came across an article that leads me to the myth and legend around Asoka tree in India.

In Ramayan the story of Rama and Sita, it is said that when Sita (Rama’s wife) was kidnapped by Ravana, she was hidden in a garden which is overwhelmed with Asoka trees. Thus for India’s society, this flower is dedicated to Rama. And the name Asoka (after sandhi vichhed) gives a meaning as one who takes away all sorrows. It is believed Sita prayed to Ashoka tree to take away her misery and sorrow of being away from her husband Rama. Thus, it is considered the symbol of Love in Hinduism.

In Buddhism, It is believed that Sakyamuni(Gautama Buddha), the founder of Buddha and Nirvana doctrine, was born under Asoka tree in X century. Asoka trees are worshipped by the Buddhist. While for Hinduism, this flower is a symbol of love.

Both Buddhist and Hinduism Asoka trees is planted in the surrounding of their temples. In India, this flower is widely used for medication; the juice obtained from the flower nectar and by boiling the branches of Asoka is believed to cure gynec diseases.

In Bengal, during Dusherra Puja, On the maha saptami day, nine plants decorated as Maa Durga is worshipped. One of these plants is Ashoka along with Banana,Wood apple, Pomegranate, Arum, Jayanti, Rice,Cola cassia and turmeric. It is believed the ladies in Bengal consume Ashoka flowers on this occasion.

The Hinduism believes that by drinking the boiled water of Asoka flower will keep their children fearful and grieve.

True or wrong it has been a part of India’s exotic culture

Christmas Tree in India

Would You Pick A Replacent to the Christmas Tree? Perhaps, A Banana Tree, Like They Do In India?

india christmas 2008 12 24 12 4 211 Would You Pick A Replacent to the Christmas Tree? Perhaps, A Banana Tree, Like They Do In India?Christains are only 2.4 per cent of India’s demographic. This may sound small but it translates to 24-million followers of Christ. India’s first church — is also said to be the world’s oldest church structure — was built in 57 AD. Understandably, Indian Christians have developed a unique culture. And even within this culture, there are several subcultures — for example, Kerala Christians, Goan Christians and Northeast Christians celebrate Christmas very differently. GoBabu presents some of the unique Christmas traditions followed by Indian Christians.
christ26 Would You Pick A Replacent to the Christmas Tree? Perhaps, A Banana Tree, Like They Do In India? One being of course, decoration of the banana tree or mango tree instead of the christamas tree by Christians in the tropical plains. Some Indian Christians even decorate their homes with mango leaves.
In other parts of India, Indians light small clay oil-burning lamps on flat roof tops and tops of walls. This is very similar to the Hindu practice of lighting lamps during Diwali. In Goa, the Southwestern Indian state known for its beautiful beaches and churches, Catholic churches are decorated with poinsettias and lit candles on Christmas eve.
Christmas is also about feasting. An Indian Christmas feast not only includes world-wide staples such as cakes and puddings, it also includes curries, Indian sweets and falvored rices.

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma are not only Bollywood’s hot couple but they are romantically lined up in the real life also. Like other couples, they drifted apart many times but again reconcile. Now that their new film, ‘Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl’ is about to hit the silver screen, they again revived their relationship.

But on the other hand, Anushka has the opposite to explain, “Ranveer is very flirtatious. Today he says this about me, tomorrow he will be charming a bunch of journalists. He is like that. We cannot be tagged as boyfriend-girlfriend or lovers or just friends. It`s a space only we both understand."

"We are very different people," she quoted.

Katrina replaces Rani as Aditya's hot favorite

Katrina Kaif Nakshatra Brand Ambassador

Rani Mukherjee might romantically link up with Yash Raj head honcho Aditya Chopra but it is Katrina Kaif who beat sixer. She is the latest muse of Yash Raj. She has delivered hits under this banner and also signed three more movies under this banner opposite the three ruling Khans of Bollywood.
Katrina will soon be seen opposite Salman in ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, Aamir in ‘Dhoom 3’ and an untitled flick starring Shahrukh Khan.
An overjoyed Katrina said, “I am just grateful to be working with such big directors and stars. I believe that the success of a film is in the hands of destiny. I look at it as a job where I have to give the best that I can. I have always learned something from every actor I have worked with, so I hope to learn from Shah Rukh and Aamir too.”

Meanwhile, trade analysts aren’t surprised by the meteoric rise of Katrina. “Kat was seen as the reason behind Mere Brother Ki Dulhan`s success. She was the calling card of the film. Promotional strategies were planned around her and she pulled it off. She cemented her position in the industry, that`s why she is the only actress who has signed three films with Aditya. On paper, all three films have approximately 200 crore riding on them," revealed a trade analyst.

However, an YRF spokesperson said, “The decision to have Katrina in three films was made on the basis of only one parameter - the script - followed by the director`s vision. Katrina was always the director`s first choice for two of those three films.”

Kareena tops sexiest Asian women list beats Katrina

Kareena Kapoor

In a recent survey conducted by Eastern Eye, a weekly through a social networking site like twitter says that Kareena Kapoor is the sexiest Asian woman in the world. The second position to hold is Katrina Kaif. Katrina was holding the position for the last three years but slipped this year through a narrow margin.
Eastern Eye showbiz editor Asjad Nazir said, "This battle between the two beauties is a sign of things to come in Bollywood in the next few years. Although the list contained pop stars, TV personalities, models and film stars from around the world, the voting quite comprehensively showed that Kareena and Katrina have put a distance between themselves and the rest of the contenders in terms of popularity."
Suzanne Khan is the new entrant, she won the 16th position. Other notable stars in the list included Priyanka Chopra (3), and Bipasha Basu (4), who both slipped down one place each. Frieda Pinto came 5th, followed by Deepika Padukone (7).

Jacqueline Fernandez (12), Nargis Fakhri (23) and Sonakshi Sinha (38) are the new entrant.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan came in the 6th position and Sonam Kapoor grabbed the 9th position. Lara Dutta stood at number 15 and Malaika Arora Khan at 19.
